Ireland has a proud tradition in many sports. The country has produced some very famous sports personalities over the years considering the population base. Irish people in general have a tremendous interest in sport and are passionate about both partaking and supporting. Gaelic Football This form of football is unique to Ireland. It is a hard, fast game played with 15 players on each team. The pinnacle of the Gaelic football season is in September for the All-Ireland final at Croke Park in Dublin. This is a massive sporting occasion in Ireland and tickets for the match are like hens teeth! Hurling Hurling is also unique to Ireland and quite simply put is not a sport for the faint hearted. This is a real mans game played at a pace rarely seen in any sport. It is in fact the fastest field game in the world and is quite simply the best sport as regards action, thrills and sheer guts in the world. Watch a game in awe and wonder how more players are not injured. Soccer The Irish are the best supporters in the world when it comes to their soccer team. Called The Green Army they travel allover the world to follow and support their team. Highlights include beating England 1-0 in 1988, making the quarter- finals at Italia 90, beating Italy 1-0 in the 1994 World Cup finals, and playing in the 2002 finals in Japan and Korea. Roll on the 2006 finals in Germany. |
